Required Qualification:

Applicants who are going to apply for Civil Service Exam must have degree in the relevant field from a well known institute or university.

The nationality of candidate must be Indian or have the citizenship of Nepal/Bhutan.

Number of Attempts and Age Limit for Appearing in UPSC Civil Service Exam:

  • For General Category participants, the new age limit is 32 years and the number of attempts is 06.
  • For OBC Category candidates, the new age limit is 35 years and the number of attempts is 09.
  • For SC/SC Category applicants, the new age limit is 37 years while the number of attempts unlimited.

UPSC Eligibility Criteria

Examination Pattern:

As we all know, the Civil Service Exam is conducted in two stages – first, the preliminary examination and the second, Mains (Written examination and Interview).

Preliminary Examination:

The UPSC CSE preliminary examination will be an objective type examination, consisting of two papers as given below. Both these papers are worth two hundred marks and are of two hours duration each.

  • General Studies paper I
  • General Studies paper II (CSAT)

General Studies paper I:

  • There have been no changes in the General Studies paper I and therefore, the syllabus the paper is as follows:
  • Current events of national and international importance,
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayat Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable development, poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives etc.
  • Indian and world Geography – Physical, Social, Economic
  • General Issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio- diversity and Climate Change
  • General Science

UPSC Syllabus

General Studies paper II (CSAT):

As per the UPSC CSE notice, the General Studies Paper II (CSAT) will be a qualifying paper. The qualifying marks for this paper have been fixed at 33% of the total marks of the paper.

In addition, the English Language Comprehension skill section of the General Studies paper II (CSAT) will be excluded.

So, the syllabus of the General Studies paper II (CSAT) is as follows:

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal Skills including Communication Skills
  • Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability
  • Decision making and Problem solving
  • General Mental Ability
  • Basic Numeracy and Data interpretation (Class X level)

Mains Examination:

The main exam is consisting of written exam and interview test. The written exam is consisting of nine papers. After that the personal interview of the contenders is conducted, on the bases of the marks obtained in interview and written test finally the test is counted for ranking.
